These are signs and common symptoms of cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The lens also adjusts the eye's focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away. The lens is mostly made of water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and lets light pass through it. As people age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract, and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, impairing your vision.
Cataracts can form at any age. The most common type of cataracts is age related. These develop as people get older. Cataracts can result from conditions such as diabetes, certain medications and other longstanding eye problems. Smoking, excessive exposure to sunlight and poor diet has also been linked with cataract development.
The most effective treatment for cataract is a surgical procedure to remove the cloudy lens. Cataract Surgery Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery is a procedure in which an ultrasonic device is used to break up and then remove a cloudy lens, or cataract, from the eye to improve vision. The insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL) usually immediately follows phacoemulsification.

Before the cataract surgery, you and your eye will be carefully checked in a pre- surgery examination to decide the details of the surgery.
During surgery, most patients receive only a local anaesthetic. You will be wide awake but feel nothing in your eye. The Ophtalomologist does the procedure with the aid of a microscope, through a small opening in the eye which normally does not require any suturing and results in minimal discomfort to the patient. The surgery typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
After the procedure, most patients notice an instant improvement in sight, although complete healing may take several weeks. Patients are normally able to carry on with normal daily activities after surgery. Immediately after surgery you should:
• Avoid rubbing your eye and wear an eye shield if you are a restless sleeper.
• Do not do heavy lifting and avoid strenuous exercise and swimming.
• Take care washing your face and hair to avoid getting water in your eye.
Your doctor will examine you the next day, and if there are no problems usually you will be encouraged to shower and wash your face as normal. Swimming and rubbing of the eye should be avoided for two weeks after surgery. Post- surgery examinations are also scheduled helping ensure proper healing and outcomes.
