Cataract Surgery at KMN EyeCare

KMN EyeCare - Katarak Medical Outcome

Cataracts are currently the leading cause of blindness in Indonesia and all over the world. Each year, an increasing number of cataract cases are reported, thus backlogging Indonesia’s national cataract elimination program. What is a cataract? By definition, a cataract is an opacification process that takes place in the normal crystalline lens of the eye, causing visual disturbances.

Our Commitment to the Best Cataract Services

KMN EyeCare uses international benchmarks* to monitor the quality of its cataract surgeries. The visual acuity of patients after cataract surgery at KMN EyeCare continues to improve year by year and consistently exceeds the established standards.

Cataract surgery, like any other surgery, carries certain risks of unwanted events. However, the rate of such events in cataract surgeries at KMN EyeCare remains below the established benchmark.

Cataract - Symptoms & Treatment at KMN EyeCare

Complete information about symptoms and treatment methods for cataracts

The main cause of cataract is the degenerative aging process. Additional causes of cataract include trauma/accidents, eye inflammations, congenital abnormalities, and other less frequent conditions.

Cataract symptoms that usually convince patients to seek help include decreased visual acuity, cloudy or blurry vision, reduced color vision and brightness, difficulties in night driving, and a frequent change in glasses prescription. In its worse condition, cataracts can lead to a total loss of vision (blindness). Using the most up-to-date cataract surgery equipment, KMN EyeCare offers cataract surgery even at the earliest stage of cataract development so as to fully restore patient vision.

With the advanced technology of phacoemulsification, you can have cataract surgery as soon as you notice any disturbances on the quality of your vision due to cataracts.

Cataract surgery is not painful. In routine cases, you will be given topical anesthetic in the form of eye drops. No injections are required.

Cataracts tend to occur at age 50 and above. In certain conditions, cataracts may develop earlier in life.

With phacoemulsification, cataract surgery does not generally require sutures, is performed on outpatient basis, and patients may resume activity the next day.

At KMN EyeCare, for the safety of the patient, we require cataract surgery to be done one eye at a time. After surgery on one eye, the second eye may be operated on 1-2 weeks after, depending on your surgeon’s recommendation.

Treatment Options & Process

Cataract surgeries are carried out daily in every branch of KMN EyeCare. These cataract surgeries are mostly performed under topical anaesthesia, thus not requiring patients’ eyes to be covered after surgery.

Prior to the commencement of any cataract surgery, every patient must undergo a series of comprehensive exams to determine the best approach for any given case of cataracts. Based on the results of the tests, your surgeon will then discuss the best method in regards to achieving the best possible medical result through a safe and comfortable process.

When it comes to cataracts, the surgical method of choice is phacoemulsification, which comprises more than 95% of all cataract surgeries done at KMN EyeCare. In phacoemulsification, the cataract is broken down into small particles and then aspirated out of the eye. Phacoemulsification technology has undergone major improvements to produce more predictable excellent results. Our latest phacoemulsification machine, the Centurion by Alcon Laboratories, only requires a surgical opening as small as 2.2mm. Such an opening is self-sealing and therefore requires no sutures after the surgery. Centurion is also known for its high safety profile, minimizing the probability of unwanted complications during or after cataract surgery.

In the final stage of cataract surgery, an intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye to perform the refractive functions of the natural lens, which is removed during cataract surgery. The phacoemulsification techniques utilize a foldable intraocular lens so that it can be inserted through the small surgical incision before it reopens to occupy its place inside the eye.

The quality of the intraocular lens significantly impacts the patient’s vision post cataract operation. To ensure the best visual result, KMN EyeCare only offers high-quality intraocular lenses to our patients. One of our most recommended lenses is the Acrysof lens, manufactured by Alcon (USA). The Acrysof lens is made of acrylic hydrophobic material with the highest bio-compatibility level and is clinically proven to have a far lower occurrence of secondary cataracts post-surgery compared to other intraocular lenses.

Cataract Technology at KMN EyeCare

The Specular Microscope is used for one of the preoperative tests done prior to cataract surgery. This procedure measures the endothelial cell count of the cornea and corneal thickness. KMN EyeCare conducts this test using the Specular Microscope Topcon SP 3000P. Any pathologies found in this measurement warrant extra precautions, as they may cause an undesirable effect on patient’s vision after the surgery.

Centurion is the latest phacoemulsification machine manufactured by Alcon in the United States. The CENTURION® Vision System offers the highest safety profile for the surgeon to deliver a smooth, responsive, and efficient cataract removal. This is achieved by better fluidic properties and superior torsional power to emulsify the cataract material. For patients, these advanced features of Centurion result in earlier visual function recovery after the surgery.
